Ancestry of Frederick Thorne of Leicester
Your starting point seems to be Frederick Thorne, aged 21, a trimmer of Sanvey Gate, Leicester, son of Thomas Thorne, framework knitter (fwk), who married Mary Jane Reed in Oct 1870.
Whilst I cannot help with Mary Jane I did get pleasantly diverted following up a bit about your Fred whilst in the Leics Records Office this evening (Wed 5th).
Presumably you already have Fred & Mary in the 1881 census as follows:
8 Henry Street, All Saints, Leicester
Frederick Thorn Hd marr 31 trimmer b Leic, All Saints
Mary J " wife " 31 b " St Margaret's
Arthur W " son 8 "
Joseph W " son 5 "
Frederick " son 3 "
Annie M R " dau 9 mths "Henry Street was a small terraced street off of Northgate St. This was/is a main road into Leicester and Sanvey Gate, another main thoroughfare, runs off of it. St Margaret's church is at its eastern end.
The next thing was to look for Fred thirty years prior to 1881 in the 1851 census, as a one year old with a father Thomas. The index to the Leicester Borough census quickly pointed the way to:
Northgate Street, Leicester
Thomas Thorne Head marr 27 fwk b Hinckley, Leics
Phebe " wife " 24 "
Ann " dau 4 "
William " son 3 "
Fred'k " son 1 "
Catherine Merrick lodger 14 factory girl b LeicesterFinding Fred's parents made me move back forwards to see if they were there in 1881. They were still at Sanvey Gate as follows:
37 Sanvey Gate, St Margaret's, Leicester
Thomas Thorn Head marr 58 gardener b Hinckley
Phebe " wife " 53 "
Mary " dau un 23 factory hand b Leicester
Phebe " dau un 20 " " "
Thomas " son 18 cigar maker "
Eliza " dau 12 factory hand "
Ada " dau 10 scholar "
Clara " dau 8 " " b Burbage
David Timpson border wid 81 b LIN Stamford
Walter H Campion " 22 b Burbage
Although Thomas states he is a gardener it seems he probably grew his own veg. As the 1881 trade directory lists him as a 'greengrocer' of 37 Sanvey Gate. Moving forward another 10 years to 1891, whilst there is no sign of Fred & Mary at Henry St, Thomas is still no. 37:37 Sanvey Gate, St Margaret's, Leicester
Thomas Thorn Hd marr 68 gardener b Hinckley
Eliza " wife " 63 "
Eliza " dau un 23 wool spinner b Leicester
Ada " dau un 20 " " "
Clara " dau un 18 " " "
William Duddle lodger 44 hosiery knitter b Hinckley
Alice Hemmings (?) " 4 b LeicesterEvidently Phebe has now died and Thomas has remarried. Clara's birthplace is different but otherwise his daughters details tie up with 1881. Further down the road is this entry:
19 Sanvey Gate, St Margaret's, Leicester:
William Thorn Hd marr 42 fishmonger b Hinckley
Emma " wife " 32 b Leicester
Kate " dau 10 "
Sarah " dau 12 "
John White lodger widow 33It seems likely that this is Fred's older brother (aged 3 in 1851). The 1891 trade directory confirms the address and trade. The 1881 directory shows a William Thorn, fish salesman, at 18 Burgess Street. I did not check this out on the 1881 census (must leave something for you to do!).
The ages and birthplaces of Thomas & Phebe's children in the 1851 census suggested a marriage in Hinckley c1845/6. I got lucky with just the second entry on the fiche:
Hinckley, St Mary
No 275 Nov 16 Thomas Thorn 21 bach stocking Hinckley fath. Joseph Thorn stocking 1844 Phebe Merrick 19 spin. makers " 2 Richard Merrick makers
X both made mark wit: ? & Sarah PayneSo it seems both Thomas & Phebe were Hinckley born, bred and married, both children of framework knitters and around 1850 moved up to Leicester. The Merrick surname suggest that the Catherine living with them in 1851 was Phebe's younger sister.
Moving further back to the Hinckley St Mary bapt registers, Thomas can be found as follows:
15 April 1823 Thomas son of Joseph & Mary Thorn of Hinckley, fwk.
The IGI also has this - a thorough search should throw up any brothers or sisters. It also shows a likely marriage for Thomas parents:
25 Jan 1818 Joseph Thorn to Mary Gallard Hinckley St Mary.
A search of the IGI for a likely baptism of this Joseph showed the following possible entry:
4 Apr 1790 Joseph Thorn to John & Mary Thorn Sheepy Magna, Leics
This is not too far from Hinckley. A good check would be to find Joseph & Mary in the 1851 census. This may tie in birthplace and age. Unfortunately no Joseph Thorn was listed. However, there was this interesting entry:1851, Bond Street, Hinckley
Mary Thorn Head widow 55 charwoman b Hinckley. It seems that Joseph has died sometime between 1823-51 (possibly after 1844 as Thomas's marr entry did not read deceased).
Another look at the IGI showed this promising entry:
4 Nov 1796 Mary Gallard to Jno/Rebeca Gallard Hinckley St Mary.
The date ties in nicely with her age in 1851. I did not look at the original marr entry for Joseph Thorn to Mary Gallard which may reveal more.
Over to Phebe Merrick's side. Her age in later census returns and at marriage suggests a birth around 1825/6. However, the IGI shows her baptism to be:
28 Apr 1828 Phoebe dau of Richard & Catherine Merrick (fwk) Hinckley St Mary
The registers show another daughter to this couple:27 Aug 1826 Eliza " " Myrrick " "
Note alternative surname spelling. There may be other baptisms in the registers & IGI.
The IGI gives a rather confusing selection of various Richard Merrick's in and around Hinckley in the 18th/early 19th century. Possible fits are:
Richard Merrick marr Catherine Thurman 8 Aug 1825 Hinckley St Mary
" " to Richard/Sarah Merrick 25 Jan 1804 "
" " " Daniel/Mary " 13 Mar 1774 DadlingtonThere are plenty of others which deserve your attention.
A search for Merrick's in the 1851 census for Hinckley gave this extremely interesting entry:
Brick Kiln Street, Hinckley
Richard Merrick Hd Widr 78 formerly fwk b Dadlington
Thomas Duddle s in law marr not known
Sarah " dau " 35 b Hinckley
John " gson 12 "
William " " 5 "
Daniel " " 3 mths "
Ann Hill dau marr 50 seamer "
Phebe Thorn neice marr 23 fwk "
Frederick neice's son 1 b LeicesterThis gives us a lot of connections. Richard's age ties up with the Dadlington bapt. in the IGI around 1774. He could be Phebe's father but perhaps more likely grandfather. Who is this Phebe and Frederick. Surely not the same as the two back in Leicester, recorded twice? It seems a coincidence if Richard Merricks sister also married a Thorn. Finally, the Duddle surname connects with that forty years later in Leicester. The 4 yr old William must be the same person!
This was all getting confusing, but interesting, so I persevered. Where were Phebe's parents Richard & Catherine in 1851? A check of the Leicester index found one of them:
12 Cumberland Street (another one close to Sanvey Gate/Northgate)
Richard Merrick Head marr 46 fwk b Hinckley
Elizabeth " wife " 40 dom. Duties b Kent Woolwich
Mary Ann Clayton d in law 10 nurse girl b Leic St Martins
Daniel Merrick son 3 at home b Leic All Saints
Eliza " dau 8 mth " "So it seems that Catherine has died and Richard remarried and followed his daughter Phebe to Leicester and settled nearby. This could be a blessing in disguise as locating Richard's second marriage would confirm his fathers name - hopefully another Richard. The Daniel Merrick name seems to keep cropping up. It would be good to make this connection as the IGI suggests there is a Daniel Merrick in Dadlington back in 1717.
The Leicester burial index gives two interesting entries (amongst many Merricks which I hadn't time to record):
Elizabeth Merrick buried Nov 1855 45 yrs at Welford Rd cem.
Richard " " Feb 1864 65 yrs "Although this latter entry makes Richard slightly too old the given address is Sanvey Gate.
So, All this gives the following possible descendant tree:John = Mary Jno = Rebeca Richard = Sarah
Thorn Gallard MerrickJoseph = Mary Richard = Catherine
Thorn Gallard Merrick ThurmanThomas Thorn = Phebe Merrick
1846 1847 1850 1858 1861 1863 1868 1871 1873
Ann William Frederick Mary Phebe Thomas Eliza Ada Clara1870 = Mary Jane
ReedThe gap between Frederick and Mary is probably filled by at least two others. Finding the family in the 1861 & 1871 census's should clarify this. I had a quick glance at the 1861 in Sanvey Gate but nothing showed up. The 1871 is only on microfilm and thus fiddly to find the right address.
Anyway, I hope all of this is of interest and use. It helps me keep my hand in, finding my way around the records, by doing this sort of exercise, as most of my 'easy' stuff on all my lines is as complete as I can get it.
I would be interested to know how you relate to the starting point of Frederick & Mary Thorn and if they stayed in Leicester.
Regards, Carl (Leicester)
